Cervantes Institute Library
Paris, France
Refurbishment and functional adaptation of the library of the Cervantes Institute in Paris.
The project consists of the refurbishment and functional adaptation of the building housing the Octavio Paz Library, bringing this important cultural infrastructure up to date. It is an old mansion built in 1883, consisting of two blocks enclosing a small service courtyard.
The building, which initially served as a library, nevertheless required urgent intervention to improve the safety, accessibility and functionality conditions that are currently demanded.

ADAPTING FUNCTIONALITY TO THE NEW TIMES
Our refurbishment project aims to optimise its use as a library, respecting the architectural typology as much as possible, while also making it possible to meet the needs required for this type of use, preserving the volumetric, spatial, morphological and artistic characteristics of the building.
One of the most influential conditioning factors has been the enhancement of the most significant heritage elements, such as the carriage passageway, the monumental staircase, the hall of mirrors and the most noble reading rooms.
The functional reorganization of the spaces had to include the resolution of accessibility and the updating of fire protection measures as well as the provision of facilities for a library of our time.
